SBUHB ‘Musical Hospitals’ Tender Application

Location: Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Swansea Bay University Health Board (NHS).

About the project

Our vision is a ‘Musical Hospital’ – Where a regular and varied programme of musical events takes place within Neath Port Talbot Hospital in every setting and place possible, as regularly as possible. This model reflects feedback from patients and staff that in-person events, which are part of a long-term programme of performances, are accessible and beneficial for Patients, Staff and Volunteers. Building on existing relationships, we have brought some of the most experienced and high profile organisations in Wales together, including Welsh National Opera, Music in Hospitals & Care, BBC NOW, RWCMD, and Live Music Now, who will predominately be based within the wards.

We will also build a framework of international–calibre musicians with a varied selection of local musicians to cater to a broad range of needs and cultures, including Welsh medium music and music to reflect our diverse patient and staffing groups. These groups and musicians will form part of our new concert series, which will take place in Neath Port Talbot Hospital Atrium.

Tender Application

Swansea Bay University Health Board invites applications from experienced consultants/ organisations to undertake an evaluation of our ‘Musical Hospitals’ pilot initiative.

We are particularly interested in applications demonstrating an understanding of the complex nature of data gathering within NHS settings, Health Economics and an in-depth knowledge and interest in music/arts in healthcare.

Background

The project has arisen from our previous Arts in health initiatives within the health board, evaluating the benefits (in particular, the cost benefits) of regular music intervention within ward settings. There is plenty of existing evidence proving the physical and mental health benefits of music, within and outside of hospital settings. We discovered that, whilst the feedback was always positive, it was quite challenging to collect regular feedback from staff and patients. We need our evaluation partner to design a method of evaluation where pertinent information is gathered at speed and with very little admin needed from staff, and patients.

We aim to build on the effects of the physical delivery, as piloted, but look at a far more in-depth analysis of the benefits to patients, staff, and wider hospital output. With an NHS Service looking to save as many costs as possible, we are particularly keen to understand whether there is a cost benefit to a ‘Musical Hospital’. For example, does it improve patient outcomes sufficiently to actually shorten their length of stay? Does it increase moral in staff sufficiently to improve retention? Does it release some staff to carry on with other work? We are open to exploring all types of data that will help show the wider benefit of Arts in Health.

This project is funded by Arts Council Wales, and is a partnership between Welsh National Opera, BBC NOW, Music in Hospitals and Care, Live Music Now, and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
