MaxLiteracy Awards 2025

Summary:

Funded by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust, MaxLiteracy offers funding for galleries, museums and visual arts organisations in the UK to support a dedicated programme of creative writing and literacy work within learning settings through the visual arts.

Content:

Funding from the Awards allows cultural organisations to employ a creative writer to work with a local school on a creative writing or literacy project, taking inspiration from the venue’s collections, displays or building. The Awards are delivered by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education with support from NAWE, the National Association for Writers in Education.

Our callout for this year’s MaxLiteracy is open until Monday 15 September 2025, 10:00am.

Key information:

  • Visual arts organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, including galleries and art museums, are invited to submit proposals to host MaxLiteracy in 2025-26 supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust.
  • Four awardees will be granted £7,000 to support a dedicated programme of art-based writing with young people in learning settings.
  • This is the first iteration of the Awards to invite applications from cultural organisations operating anywhere in the UK, particularly Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
  • To celebrate this, we are particularly interested in proposals exploring Welsh, Scottish Gaelic or Irish Gaelic, as well as English and other languages or dialects used within the United Kingdom.
  • To be eligible, creative writing projects must take inspiration from visual artwork, collections, displays or buildings.
