Start Date: March 2025

Project overview
This project is led by the University of South Wales in partnership with Bawso and is funded by Health and Care Research Wales. Bawso is the lead organisation in Wales providing practical and emotional support to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) migrant victims of domestic abuse, sexual violence, human trafficking, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage.
The project will explore multi-agency working in relation to the needs and experiences of BME women affected by VAWDASV to co-develop a multi-agency framework for Wales. The framework will inform the ways in which agencies can best work together to prevent, protect, and support ethnic minority women.
The project includes two peer researchers from the Bawso community, and an advisory group comprised of the project team, Bawso current or ex-service users, and professionals representing statutory services.
Scope of the work
We are seeking to commission a Digital Storytelling (DS) workshop facilitator with strong audio-visual editing skills to work as part of the project to facilitate 2 in-person workshops (delivered over 2 days each), co-creating material for 12 DS across the workshops. The DS will be collected from BME women who have experienced VAWDASV and are Bawso current or ex-service users. Workshops will be attended by either the work package lead Professor Emily Underwood-Lee or the project’s senior research assistant Dr Sophia Kier-Byfield (participant observation), and Vilas Kerrai (Bawso participant support). All freelancer work will also be overseen by team members throughout the process. Following the workshops, the facilitator will edit all material collected to create and deliver 12 DS according to what was agreed with each participant during the workshop.

These stories will be subject to review by participants and the project team. The review conversations will be coordinated by the project team and feedback will be communicated to the facilitator. Following feedback from the project team, the facilitator may be required to undertake 1 re-edit per story to create the final 3-minute films. The facilitator will be expected to add English language subtitles to all films that
are delivered in English.
There may be different language requirements in the workshops and interpreters may be assisting participants. Stories may be recorded in another language of a participant’s choice and a recorded translation will be provided during workshops to create an English version. The facilitator will be required to edit/add images etc. to those versions as well, which would result in two versions of the same story. The DS workshop facilitator will have expertise in collecting and co-creating DS with vulnerable/marginalised communities and working with diverse groups of workshop participants. They will be experienced in delivering on time, to budget and in line with project aims and objectives. The facilitator will be sensitive to the needs of survivors, understand the ethics of working with survivor stories, and adhere to the University
Ethics Committee approvals/documentation and data management protocols that will be clearly explained.
We anticipate 6 participants at each workshop, which will be held at Bawso premises. We anticipate 1 workshop (held over 2 days) to be in North Wales, and 1 workshop (held over 2 days) to be in South Wales. These plans are subject to potential changes dependent upon uptake and participant criteria.
Timeline
The project is funded for two years, October 2024-September 2026. - - - -
DS workshops will take place in March and April 2025, with locations, dates and
times to be agreed by the facilitator and project team.
12 DS delivered by 30th May 2025
Feedback delivered to facilitator by 30th June 2025
Final DS delivered: End of July 2025
Throughout this timeframe, regular progress updates via email and Teams meetings,
