Introduction
The variety of activities offered across the county within towns and small rural villages has given people an opportunity to be introduced to various music, dance, art and creative sessions with 2,098 individuals participating in the Community Arts programme between July 2023 and November 2024.
Some of these taster sessions gave people the opportunity to participate in various activities either as a family or as individuals. These allowed people to experience the arts and for some led to confidence to attend other sessions within the community. These individuals said that they had made new friends and felt an increase sense of community when engaging with the creative activities. They also shared that it had made a positive change to their mood.
The other activities were over a longer period, with some sessions now running for months or even years and therefore offered longer-term outcomes. These sessions had a clear objective to use the arts to support people with various health and well-being needs such as dementia, anxiety, stress or depression. Individuals shared that they felt less isolated as they had the creative session to look forward to every week and had developed a support group. An improvement in mental well-being was experienced by those attending as was an improvement in their self-esteem and for some it offered them alternative ways of coping and gave them the confidence o try new things.
The skills of all the tutors involved were appreciated and their empathy, flexibility and ability to ensure that everyone was included in the sessions helped to ensure a positive impact in people’s lives.
The results demonstrate that positive social value is created to individuals who participate in Denbighshire Leisure’s Community Arts project. The range is estimated to be between £4.15 and £6.65 and a suggested SROI result of £5.44:1. This means that for every £1 invested, £5.44 of social value is created.
