An opportunity to immerse myself in the world of experimental filmmaking and continue my research into its wellbeing benefits.

In 2021, I was lucky enough to receive a small grant through Moving Parts Arts to create a first draft digital puppet show. Through this, in a flurry of an all-nighter shooting in my shed, Dear Heartbreak was born. The film explores the grieving stages of heartbreak, and was a part of a larger body of work exploring the wellbeing benefits of puppetry and filmmaking. It has been pivotal in shifting my practice into the world of community film, and the rooting of my practice in health and wellbeing, which I have supported through training in therapeutic puppetry, mindfulness through film and my foundation certificate in Art Therapy.

In the following 2 years, I worked with a wonderful team developing the piece into a fully realised short film, funding the work ourselves. The film was finished during a community residency at Tŷ Pawb, where Menai Rowlands and I worked together to use puppetry, filmmaking, animation and painting to tell the stories of Wrexham. Informed by research groups, workshops, and a chronic obsession with heartbreak, this film is one of my proudest achievements and representative of the type of film I would like to make. In both its story and creation, Dear Heartbreak is a testament to the human (and puppet) spirit, and its remarkable ability to persevere.

With some perseverance, we have been rewarded with a wonderful festival run nationally and internationally, screening in Canada, California, Australia in addition to wonderful Welsh festivals such as WOW One World Wales Film Festival and Chapter Movie Maker. Recently, the piece was selected for Éphémère, an event in London in its first year. Éphémère is a home for the thrifty, the DIY and the experimental. I was excited to see Dear Heartbreak selected for this event, both as a wonderful achievement for the film, and as an opportunity to immerse myself in the world of experimental filmmaking and continue my research into its wellbeing benefits. The Go and See grant from Wales Arts Health and Wellbeing Network enabled me to attend the event in person. This provided the opportunity to view a breadth of experimental film, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and video as a medium. In addition, I was able to network and meet artists, filmmakers and performers applying film to their arts in health practice.

Yn 2021, bûm yn ddigon ffodus i dderbyn grant bach trwy Moving Parts Arts i greu sioe bypedau digidol drafft cyntaf. Trwy hyn, mewn llu o saethu trwy'r nos yn fy sied, ganwyd Dear Heartbreak. Mae’r ffilm yn archwilio cyfnod galaru wedi i berthynas ramantaidd dod i ben, ac roedd yn rhan o gorff mwy o waith yn archwilio buddion lles pypedwaith a chreu ffilmiau. Mae wedi bod yn ganolog i fy ymarfer ym myd ffilm gymunedol, iechyd a lles. Rwyf wedi cefnogi hyn drwy hyfforddiant mewn pypedau therapiwtig, meddylgarwch drwy ffilm a fy nhystysgrif sylfaen mewn Therapi Celf.

Yn y 2 flynedd ganlynol, bûm yn gweithio gyda thîm gwych gan ddatblygu’r darn yn ffilm fer, gan ariannu’r gwaith ein hunain. Gorffennwyd y ffilm yn ystod cyfnod preswyl cymunedol yn Ty Pawb, lle bu Menai Rowlands a minnau’n gweithio gyda’n gilydd i ddefnyddio pypedwaith, gwneud ffilmiau, animeiddio a phaentio i adrodd straeon Wrecsam. Wedi’i llywio gan grwpiau ymchwil, gweithdai, ac obsesiwn cronig â thorcalon, mae’r ffilm hon yn un o’m llwyddiannau mwyaf balch ac yn gynrychioliadol o’r math o ffilm yr hoffwn ei gwneud. Yn ei stori a’i chreadigaeth, mae Dear Heartbreak yn dyst i’r ysbryd dynol (a’r ysbryd pyped), a’i allu rhyfeddol i ddyfalbarhau.

Gyda pheth dyfalbarhad, rydym wedi cael ein gwobrwyo gyda rhediad fendigedig mewn gwyliau ffilm, yn genedlaethol ac yn rhyngwladol. Mae hyn yn cynnwys dangos yng Nghanada, California, Awstralia yn ogystal â gwyliau Cymreig gwych megis Gŵyl Ffilm WOW One World Wales a Chapter Movie Maker. Yn ddiweddar, dewiswyd y darn ar gyfer Éphémère, digwyddiad yn Llundain yn ei flwyddyn gyntaf. Mae Éphémère yn gartref i'r amgen, y DIY a'r arbrofol. Roeddwn yn gyffrous i weld Dear Heartbreak yn cael ei ddewis ar gyfer y digwyddiad hwn, fel cyflawniad gwych i'r ffilm, ac fel cyfle i ymgolli ym myd gwneud ffilmiau arbrofol a pharhau â'm hymchwil i'w buddion lles. Fe wnaeth y grant Ewch i Weld gan Rwydwaith Celfyddydau, Iechyd a Lles Cymru fy ngalluogi i fynychu’r digwyddiad yn Llundain. Rhoddodd hyn y cyfle i weld ehangder o ffilm arbrofol, gan wthio ffiniau adrodd straeon a fideo fel cyfrwng. Yn ogystal, roeddwn yn gallu rhwydweithio a chwrdd ag artistiaid, gwneuthurwyr ffilm a pherfformwyr sy'n cymhwyso ffilm i'w hymarfer celfyddydau mewn iechyd.
